Life Insurance Code Review Puts Customer Treatment Back in Focus

Why the next stage of industry reform matters before you buy or renew cover

The review of Australia’s Life Insurance Code of Practice has moved from a broad governance discussion into a more practical question for households: what should good insurer behaviour look like when people apply for cover, update a policy or make a claim?

For consumers, the Code matters because it sits behind many day-to-day interactions with life insurers. It can influence how medical and financial information is requested, how exclusions are explained, how vulnerable customers are supported, and how clearly insurers communicate during difficult claims. While legislation and product disclosure documents set formal obligations, the Code is intended to create an additional benchmark for conduct across the industry.

This is an extension of earlier developments in the Code review, but the consumer takeaway is becoming sharper. Policy value is not only about the monthly premium. It is also about whether the insurer’s process is clear, fair and responsive when the policyholder or their family needs help most.

Several themes are especially relevant for Australians comparing or reviewing life cover. First, underwriting transparency remains a key issue. Applicants need to understand why health, occupation, lifestyle and financial questions are being asked, and how the answers may affect premiums, exclusions or acceptance terms. Second, claims handling remains central to trust. A policy can look competitive at purchase, but delays, unclear requests for information or poor communication can create severe stress at claim time.

Third, the review highlights the importance of plain-language communication. Many households hold cover through superannuation or direct policies without fully understanding definitions such as total and permanent disablement, trauma events, waiting periods, benefit periods or pre-existing condition exclusions. Better explanations would make it easier for customers to compare the real substance of policies, not just the advertised price.

For families, the practical step is to treat the Code review as a reminder to check existing cover. Look at the insured amount, ownership structure, beneficiaries, exclusions, premium type and whether the policy still reflects current debts, income and dependants. It can also be useful to estimate how much cover their family may actually need before changing or cancelling a policy.

The outcome of the review will not remove the need for careful comparison, but stronger standards could help rebuild confidence in a product many Australians rely on during the most financially vulnerable moments of their lives.

Recent heavy vehicle industry reporting has again highlighted roadside compliance activity, with enforcement attention on mechanical condition, fatigue records, load restraint and day-to-day maintenance evidence. For truck operators, the message is broader than avoiding an infringement. Renewed industry pressure to reduce insurance taxes has put affordability back in the spotlight for rural and regional Australia.
